Turun linnan aarteita

Kävimme linnassa Keskiaikaisten markkinoiden aikaan Linnan arkea ja juhlaa -nimisellä kierroksella. Kuten olen jo tainnut mainitakin, minulla ei ole erillistä kameraa, ja linnassa oli kovin pimeää, joten kovin montaa kuvaa varsinaiselta kierrokselta en viitsinyt napsia. Muutoinkin olen enemmän myöhempien aikakausien neito ja kiinnostavimmat jutut löytyivätkin opastetun kierroksen jälkeen renessanssikerrosten näyttelytilojen vitriineistä. Ei sikäli, etteikö kierros ollut mielenkiintoinen, mutta sen suurin anti oli mielestäni oppaan kertoma, ei niinkään visuaalinen puoli. Pitemmittä puheitta, tässä muutama kuva:

Treasures of the Turku castle

We visited the castle during the medieval faire and went on the guided tour called Feast and Daily Life in the Medieval Castle. As I think I've previously mentioned, I don't own a proper camera, and the castle was rather dark, so I didn't bother taking that many pictures on the tour. I'm more of a maiden of latter eras anyway and indeed, the most interesting things to me could be found in the galleries of the renaissance floors of the castle. Not that the tour was uninteresting, but I got the most out of what the tour guide told us rather than what there was to see. Without further ado, here are a few pictures:

Linnassa oli oppaan lisäksi monia muitakin näyttelijöitä esittelemässä aikakauden puuhia. Tässä näkyy piparkakkumuotteja ja piparkakkuja. Hiukan ovat muuttuneet matkalla nykypäivään. Hienoimmat piparkakut päällystettiin lehtikullalla.
There were quite a few actors at the castle to present how things were done in the medieval times. Here a man was making gingerbread with the moulds seen on the table. They've changed quite a bit on their way to present day. The most exquisite ones were covered with gold leaf.

Korkea-arvoisimpienkaan naisten ei sopinut istuskella toimettomina. Tässä näyttelijät valmistivat kenkiä, kirjontatöitä ja lankaa. Myöhemmässä salissa trubaduurit soittivat ja tanssittivat vieraita hoviväen ja rahvaan malliin.
Even the noblest women weren't allowed to sit idly. Here the women are making shoes, embroidery and thread. In another hall, troubadours played music and made us dance, both in the way the nobility would've as well as the common folk.

Loput kuvat ovatkin näyttelytilojen puolelta. Olen aika ihastunut erilaisiin hattuihin ja olisin kovasti halunnut päästä tutkailemaan näiden rakenteita lähemminkin. Tämä on silkkitaftinen bahytti 1850-luvulta.

The rest of the pictures are from the gallery. I'm quite fond of hats, and I really would've loved to get to study the structures on these more closely. This one's silk taffeta bonnet from the 1850's.

Tästä en huomannut ottaa tietoja ylös, mutta 1800-lukua varmaan tämäkin.

I forgot to take note of where this was from, but probably the 19th century as well.

Atlassilkkinen strutsinsulkakoristeinen hattu 1880-luvulta. Tämäntapaisen olen ajatellut yrittää tehdä kunhan löydän sopivan halvan ja tukevan olkihatun sen pohjaksi.

An ostrich feather ornamented silk satin hat from 1880's. I've been thinking of making something similar as soon as I can find a study enough and cheap enough straw hat for a base.

Tässä ihastuin erityisesti tuohon sulkaperhoseen/-kolibriin. Huopahattu vuodelta 1953.

I loved the feather butterfly/hummingbird on this one. A felt hat from 1953.

Nähtävillä oli myös kokoelma hattuneuloja. Omat suosikkini olivat vasemmanpuoleisin filigraanineula sekä kolmas vasemmalta.

They also had a collection of hat pins. My personal favourites were the filigree one on the left and the third from the left.

Myös kengissä riitti ihasteltavaa. Kauppias G.W. Säven vihkikengät vuodelta 1835.

There were quite a few pairs of shoes to marvel at as well. These are the wedding shoes of  the merchant G.W. Säve.

Paljetein ja helmin koristellut kengät 1890-luvulta. Näistä tahtoisin jäljennökset vaikka jokapäiväiseen käyttööni, ehkä pyöreämmillä kärjillä.

Sequin and bead embellished shoes from 1890's. I'd love a replica of these for everyday wear, maybe with rounded toes.

Harmi, etten ottanut tästäkään ylös miltä vuodelta asu oli. 1800-luvun loppupuoliskoa, 1870-lukua? 1880-lukua?

I wish I'd taken note which year this dress was from. The latter half of the 19th century, 1870's? 1880's?

1800-luvulla osattiin ainakin olla luovia korujen materiaalien suhteen. Näissä kuvissa on vainajien hiuksista valimistettuja koruja. Pidän kovasti memento mori -tyylisistä jutuista ja nämä erityisesti kiehtovat.

People really were creative when it came to jewellery making materials in the 19th century. Here are jewellery made of the hair of the departed. I really like memento mori kind of things and these I find especially fascinating.

Nämä puolestaan on tehty kalansuomuista. Diadeemi, rannerengas ja rintaneula.

These are made of fish scales. A diadem, a bracelet and a brooch.

Nämä koristekammat ovat 1820-30-luvulta ja kilpikonnankuoresta kaiverrettuja. Ei kyllä riittäisi oma kärsivällisyyteni saati veistotaidot.

These ornamental combs are from 1820's or 30's and made of turtle shells. I'd never have the patience, nor the skill, wow.

 Viimeiset esineet vieraammista materiaaleista: kivihiilikoruja 1890-luvulta, ilmeisesti näitä kutsutaan myös gagaatiksi.

The final items of stranger materials: jet jewelry from 1890's (translation slightly uncertain).

Materiaalina tuttu kulta, mutta käyttötarkoitus ei joka tytölle nykypäivänä taida olla päivänselvä. Tanssiaisohjelma 1880-luvulta. Vyölle kiinnitettävästä orvokista roikkuvat tanssivihko, kynänholkki, peili ja kukkaro.

While the material for this is familiar gold, I doubt the purpose of this is obvious to every girl nowadays. It was an accessory to be worn at balls. The violet would be attached to one's belt and off it hang a small notebook for dance reservations, a pen holder, a mirror and a small coin purse.

Hopeinen hääkruunu ja rintaneula miehelle noin vuodelta 1900. Tämä näyttäisi todella kauniilta mustilla hiuksilla...

Emerald slippers & witches' brew

Ensimmäinen oikea lomaviikko tuli ja meni ja linnani alkaa näyttää pikkuhiljaa taas asuinkelpoiselta. Kankaiden, lehtien, koulupapereiden, tiskien ja kaavapaperin alta löytyi kuin löytyikin pöytiä, tuoleja ja lopulta lattiakin. Tässä postauksessa ajattelin kuitenkin esitellä aherrukseni tuotteiden sijaan muutaman viimeaikaisen löytöni.

Viime viikonloppuna olivat Turun keskiaikaiset markkinat, joilla kävimme kaverini kanssa lauantaina kiertelemässä. Vaikka olen Turussa asunutkin jo kuutisen vuotta ja sitäkin ennen lähellä, tämä taisi olla minulle toinen kerta markkinoilla. Viimeiseksi se ei varmasti jää. Vaikkei se keskiaikainen olekaan, sain tekosyyn pukea päälle renessanssipukuni. Se on kuitenkin tarpeeksi lähellä, ettei juurikaan aiheuttanut kummastusta eikä Suomessa tietääkseni varsinaisia renessanssitapahtumia järjestetä. Markkinoiden tunnelma oli aivan omaa luokkaansa ja olisin löytänyt vaikka kuinka paljon kaunista ja koreaa ostettavaa. Vastoin odotuksiani sain vastustettua kiusausta ostaa uusia koruja, mutta niitäkin olisi kyllä voinut kantaa kotiin kassikaupalla.

The first proper holiday week came and went, and my castle is starting to appear habitable. Beneath the piles of fabric, magazines, school papers, dishes and pattern paper, there appeared tables, chairs, and finally, floor. In this post, however, I'm going to present, instead of the fruits of my labour, some things I've acquired in the past couple of weeks.

The Medieval Market of Turku was last weekend and I spent the saturday with a friend of mine at the faire. Although I've lived in Turku for around six years, this must've been only my second time at the market. But won't be the last. Although it isn't strictly medieval, I had an excuse to wear my renaissance gown. It's close enough so that people won't wonder if I've escaped from somewhere and to my knowledge, there aren't any renaissance faires in Finland. The feel of the faire was without comparison and I could've found so much beautiful and wonderful things to buy. I managed to resist the urge to buy new jewellery, but I could've found bagfuls.

So what did I find? As mentioned in the title, a tea called the Witches' brew.

Mitä mukaani sitten tarttui? Otsikossakin mainittua Witches' brew nimistä teetä.

Tee on sekoitus koivun ja vadelman lehtiä sekä seljanmarjaa. Melko miedon makuista mutta näin kesällä sopii oikein hyvin ainakin minun makuuni. Tuoksu tuo mieleen saunavihdan. Tykkään myös teen väristä, mikä on nimelleen sopiva vihertävä ruskea, kuulaampi kuin mustan teen ruskea. Kuvassa ovat myös Indiskasta ostamani teekuppi ja -lautanen sekä sihti. Kuppi näyttää suuremmalta kuin tavalliset mukit, mutta taitaa olla melko samaa kokoluokkaa, vain paljon laakeampi, mikä on hyvä juttu, koska tässä kupissa tee ehtii mukavasti jäähtyä vartin kahvitauossa juomalämpöiseksi. Sihtikin on sikäli hyvä, että siinä on kiinteä varsi eikä ketjua niin kuin useimmissa.

The tea is a blend of birch and raspberry leaves and elderberries. It has a rather mild taste but I like it, especially now in the summer. The smell reminds me of a bath whisk, a nostalgic and dear smell for a Finn. I also like the colour of the tea: a greenish brown, well suited for the name, clearer than that of black tea. Also in the picture are my tea cup and saucer and strainer. The cup looks much larger than regular mugs, but I don't think it is by much, it's just wider, which is great since the tea has time to cool down to a drinkable temperature in this cup on a fifteen minute break. I like the strainer as well because it has a solid shank instead of the regular chain.

En osaa vielä sanoa, miten tehokasta tämä on, mutta kosteuttaa ainakin sopivasti. Parasta tässä kuitenkin on ruusuöljystä saatu tuoksu. Aivan kuin villiruusu! Tätä voisin käyttää parfyyminkin tapaan. I don't know how effective it is yet, but at least it moisturizes nicely. The best thing about the creme, however, is the fragrance of the rose essential oil. Just like a wild rose! I could use this as a perfume. My third purchase were two black rabbit skins. It's a shame a picture can't carry the feel of a thing:

Kolmas markkinaostokseni oli kaksi mustaa kanintaljaa. Harmi, että kuvalla ei pysty välittämään tuntua:

Näissä on aivan uskomattoman pehmoinen karva ja ellen keksi jotain muuta ihanuutta ennen kevättä, näistä tulee koulussa nahkatakkikurssilla kaulukset nilkkapituiseen mustaan nahkatakkiin. Olen tullut siihen tulokseen, että vaikka käyttäisinkin mieluummin second hand -turkista tai vähintään vapaana eläneen eläimen taljaa, joutuisin pitämään itseäni tekopyhänä, jos jatkaisin lihansyöntiä, mutta kavahtaisin kasvatettua turkista. Eläimen kannalta on aivan sama kasvatetaanko se turkin tai nahan vai lihan vuoksi, eikä niitä minkkejä nyt elävältä nyljetä. Päivittäistä liha-annostani varten synnytetään, kasvatetaan ja tapetaan vuosittain kymmeniä possuja, kanoja, lehmiä ja kaloja, mutta kaksi kaniako olisi liikaa? Valinta se lihansyöntikin on, kyllä ihminen elossa pysyy kasviksillakin. Mutta se saarnaamisesta tällä erää.

These have an amazingly soft fur and unless I think of some other wonderful thing to make out of them, in the spring on a leather coat course at school they'll become a fur collar for my ankle length black leather coat. I've concluded that even though I'd rather use second hand fur or the fur of wild animals, I'd have to consider myself a hypocrite if I continued to eat meat while shunning the use of farmed fur. The animal doesn't care if it's kept for its fur or leather or its meat, and the minks aren't skinned alive. For my daily dose of meat, dozens of pigs, chickens, cows and fish are being born, raised and killed, but two bunnies is two much? It is a choice to eat meat, a human can survive as a vegetarian. But that's enough of a sermon for now.


I receive a deed for my title at the market. They were selling titles for three euros, oh how inflation has hit the nobility...

Vähänkäytetyt Funtasman satiinikorkkarit vähän kuvaa syvemmän vihreinä. Ne sopivat jokin aika sitten kirppikseltä löytämäni vihreästä satiinista ja mustasta sametista tehdyn vanhojenpuvun kanssa kuin olisivat sitä varten tehdyt.

Kävimme lauantaina myös Turun linnassa kierroksella, mutta siitä lisää seuraavalla kerralla :).

Little worn satin pumps by Funtasma, in a slightly deeper green than shown in the picture. They'll go really nicely with a dress that I got from a flea market a while ago: green satin with black velvet. Like they were made for it.


We also went on a guided tour at the Turku castle on saturday, but I'll tell more about that another time :).
