Laukkuprojektini ja kielipolitiikkaa

When I started my blog, I made the choice to write in Finnish since that is my native tongue and, although some things come to me easier in English than in Finnish, it is still my most fluent language. However, I've already attracted a couple international readers, so it would seem fair to include at least a summary in English. And that's precisely what I intend to do from now on. They will be found at the end of each post.

Samalla kun puursin renessanssipukuni parissa meillä oli myös laukkukurssi. Kuten koulussani on tapana, suunnitteluun annettiin hyvin vapaat kädet ja valitsin lähtökohdakseni parin messinkisiä lampunosia, jotka olin löytänyt metalliosastomme myyntilaatikoista sekä tumman liilan velourin, jonka olin löytänyt niiden pariksi. Kolusin kangaskaupan koristetarjontaa ja keräsin kasaan suunnilleen kaikki yhteensopivat kullansävyiset koristenauhat sun muut: pitsiä, koristeköyttä, jäykähköä hapsunauhaa ja verhontamppi. Laukustani tulisi ylitseampuvan ylellinen, hiukan ehkä itämaisellakin estetiikalla maustettu ja pehmeän muotoinen.

Joustava velour ja pitsi osoittautuivat äärettömän ikäviksi työstää, vaikka suurimmaksi osaksi tuinkin sen yhdistämällä sen liimaharsolla joustamattomaan kankaaseen. Kyllä tuota kehtaa julkisesti silti käyttää. Malli syntyi lampunosien pohjalta kun mietin miten niitä voisin laukussani käyttää ja päädyin tähän poimutettuu ratkaisuun. Laukku oli yllättävän helppo kaavoittaa, vaikka pelkäsin että joutuisin tekemään monta koeversiota ennen kuin olisin siihen tyytyväinen. Lopulta en tarvinnut kuin yhden. Laukun kaavasta tuli suunnilleen pohjastaan pullistettu puolisuunnikas. Yläreuna on pohjasaumaa reilusti lyhyempi ja köyden kujat kulkevat yläreunasta vinosti pohjaan. Kantohihnan kangasosuus on neliö, jonka ompelin köyden ympärille putkeksi, poimutin päät ja viimeistelin koristenauhalla.

In addition to the course where I made the renaissance gown seen in the previous post, I also had a course that ended just now, where we were told to make a bag, any kind of bag we liked that was more complicated than the basic tote bag.

I had already found these brass lamp pieces and a gorgeous dark purple velour to go with them, so I decided to catch the opportunity to tick this project off my to-do list. I raided the trim section in a local fabric store and added to my stash some gold lace, decorative rope, fringed trim and a tassel that's meant to hold a curtain to the side. I wanted my bag to look luxurious, slightly Arabian nights influenced and softly shaped.

The stretchy velour and lace were a pain to work with but I'm quite pleased with the outcome. The lamp pieces dictated the shape of the bag this time and I decided on a sort of a trapezium shape with a rounded bottom for the body of the bag and a square for the strap part. This I sewed into a tube around the rope and ruched in the ends and finished with some of the fringed trim. The body of the bag is gathered near the ends with the rope.
